Nebraska extends HC Matt Rhule through 2032.

The college football coaching carousel is at an all time high in terms of unpredictability right now. We just watched Penn State fire James Franklin one year after making it to the Semi Finals, LSU fired Brian Kelly after multiple winning seasons, and Florida fired Billy Napier after a win vs Miss St. This doesn’t include teams like Oklahoma St and UCLA who also have interim coaches currently in charge. With this many coaching positions open, naturally rumors will fly all over as coaches with certain ties to some schools look like easy hires.

Nebraska’s Matt Rhule is no exception to this, despite improvement each year, people still expected the Penn State alum to have some interest in coaching at his alma mater. Well this would not come to fruition as the Cornhuskers said holdup, let’s talk business. Just like that Matt Rhule receives an additional 2 year extension on his current contract, keeping him under contract until 2032. This new deal also increased his current buyout from $5 million to $15 million, thus practically eliminating him from any schools searching for a new head coach.

The Cornhuskers currently sit at 6-2, and last year reached their first bowl game since 2016. Rhule cited his family’s happiness in Lincoln Nebraska as the primary reason as to why he elected to sign an extension. Rhule sees a lot of potential in what he’s building in the Nebraska football program, and thinks they can contend for a Big 10 title very soon. They are currently on pace for their best season since 2016 when they went 9-4.

Rhule’s salary throughout the contract has an average annual value of $11.7 million, putting him among the highest paid coaches in college football.
