New England Patriots defensive lineman Christian Barmore has been charged with misdemeanor assault and battery involving a household or family member, according to court records in Massachusetts. The charge is connected to an alleged incident that occurred on Aug. 8 and was officially filed on Dec. 16. Barmore is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 3.
The Patriots acknowledged the situation in a statement released on Wednesday, stating that the organization was aware of the incident when it occurred and promptly notified the NFL. The team added that the case remains part of an active legal process and that they will continue to cooperate with the league.
The allegations come from a woman who said she was in a relationship with Barmore at the time. She told police that an argument began over the temperature setting of an air conditioner and later escalated during a dispute about food. According to the report, she attempted to leave the residence when Barmore allegedly took her phone from her hands. The woman further alleged that as she moved toward the door to seek help, Barmore grabbed her and threw her to the ground. She stated that he then held her by her shirt near her neck as she tried to stand, before eventually releasing her.
Barmore is in his fifth NFL season and was selected by New England in the second round of the 2021 draft out of Alabama. He has appeared in all 16 games this season, starting 15, and has recorded 26 tackles, one sack, and 10 quarterback hits.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters Wednesday that Barmore did not attend practice due to illness.
The charge comes one day after Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs was reported to be facing a felony strangulation charge and a misdemeanor assault charge related to a separate alleged incident on Dec. 2. The NFL is reviewing both matters under its Personal Conduct Policy
New England has already secured a playoff spot and will close out the regular season Sunday at home against the Miami Dolphins.
