Well, it happened. Artemi Panarin was finally traded, to the Los Angeles Kings for OHL Prospect Liam Greentree, a Conditional 3rd and a potential conditional 4th. The third turns into 2nd if the Kings win a playoff round, and the Rangers get an additional 4th if the Kings win two rounds. Greentree is an OHL monster, but he is twenty and still playing in the OHL, there is no certainty that his talents will translate into the NHL, especially with the Rangers development team.
This was all around a disaster for the organization and especially for the worst GM in the league, Chris Drury. After releasing a letter and publicly saying that they will not be resigning Panarin left him with ZERO leverage in any kind of trade. If he had not said all of this, then if teams withhold first overalls or promising prospects, Drury can hold a resigning over their head. This especially stings since Panarin signed a TWO year ELEVEN-million-dollar deal in Los Angeles, leaving us wondering if that same offer had not been given to Drury… and he rejected it.
This overall just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Panarin wanted to stay and Drury flubbed another deal and more players trusts by not being able to keep his mouth shut. I could be a better GM than him. If he had planned to actually go in a retool away from Panarin, this would have been the best course of action, but so far in this “retool” we have lost one of our only positive shutdown d-men and our best skater of the last twenty-five years and gained Liam Greentree and two third round picks.
Fire Drury
