Charles Bediako’s college career is over… again

Former Alabama basketball player Charles Bediako is officially done with college basketball for good. After receiving a temporary restraining order from an Alabama judge, Bediako played 5 games for the Crimson Tide. On Monday, a different Alabama circuit judge denied Bediako’s motion for a preliminary injunction, thus ending his college basketball career.

Bediako left Alabama initially after declaring for the 2023 NBA draft, where he’d go undrafted and sign a two way NBA contract, spending three seasons in the G league. Bediako will now turn to other options to try and continue his basketball career. Now the NCAA should have a standard they can use in any future cases involving a player attempting to return.

We’ve seen most recently former UCLA standout Amari Bailey make an attempt to return to college basketball, despite being a 2nd round draft pick and appearing in 10 NBA games in his career. After the Bediako ruling it’ll be interesting to see how far Bailey can get in his attempt. If ruled eligible, he’d become the first player to play college basketball after appearing in NBA games.

Since the NIL era started, the NCAA has certainly had its hands full. But, it seems they’ve found some backbone, and will not allow professional players to return to the college level.
