Somehow, someway, the eight-time Super Bowl champion head coach, and the head coach of one of, if not the, greatest football dynasty of all time, Bill Belichick, will not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
There have been murmurings in recent years about the legitimacy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and those murmurings have turned to uproar, apparently because Belichick did not receive the 40 of 50 votes needed for induction in his first year of eligibility. They then called him to let him know he wasn’t.
It is insane to think about, and many back this. How did Bill Belichick not receive support from 80% of the committee members? Belichick himself doesn’t even understand, stating, “Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?” That is just his championships as head coach of the New England Patriots, as he also won two as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants.
Now, of course, the Pro Football Hall of Fame isn’t going to comment on the situation, and why would they? It’s embarrassing. We’re talking about the man who has been considered by many the G.O.A.T. head coach and the one who built the dynasty alongside Tom Brady. He may not have had the ending to his time with the Patriots he would have wanted, but on a real note, who cares?
To put it into perspective, he has 6 Super Bowl wins as a head coach, which is FIRST. He has 9 Conference Championship crowns, which is FIRST. He has 31 playoff wins, which again, is FIRST. He also has 333 total wins, which is second, and 302 regular-season wins, which is third, all of which are all-time.
It’s not just the internet and people who could be considered “irrelevant” to the topic who are speaking out on the matter. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes wrote on his X account, “Insane… don’t even understand how this could be possible,” and JJ Watt said, “I can’t be reading this right.”
When you have all-stars speaking out on the matter, you know something’s up, but in this case, it was a head-scratcher right when it was released. It makes 0 sense, and most people probably thought it was a typo.
Only time will tell what the committee members were thinking, but the pot is starting to stir with things like “Spygate”, but it would definitely be nice to understand what in the world is going on, because I, and most people, could never imagine this a possibility.
