There are plenty of quarterbacks in the National Football League who have been putting in incredible performances this season, like Baker Mayfield or Jared Goff, but has anyone done more than Drake Maye with the players he has to work with?
Maye came out of North Carolina last season, and was thrust into a bad situation, having to wait to make his debut behind Jacoby Brissett, and then coming in for 13 games of the 2024 season, and keeping New England competitive in most of them, despite the Patriots finishing out the season 4-13. Fast forward to 2025, New England sits 5-2, atop the AFC East and unbeaten in their division, and Maye is proving why he should without a doubt be the guy to suit up under center for the prestigious organization for years to come.
Maye has become one of the best deep ball throwers in the league, while also having the highest completion percentage in the league at 75.2%, and also being able to get things done with his legs when he needs to. He has thrown for 1,744 yards and 12 touchdowns, whilst only throwing 2 picks. He also has 200 rushing yards. Most recently against the Tennessee Titans, he set a New England franchise record held by the GOAT, Tom Brady, slating in with the highest single game completion percentage at 91.3%. Brady’s highest was 88.5% set in 2009.
Maye is also the first NFL quarterback to achieve a six-game stretch with at least 150+ passing attempts, 75%+ completion rate, 125+ passer rating, and 150+ rushing yards.
The Patriots have a questionable and an unfortunate loss on the season, as the Week 1 loss to the Raiders shouldn’t of happened, and the Week 3 loss to the Steelers was due to turnovers, but there is a good argument that New England could 100% have won both of those games.
Now, we haven’t reached the halfway mark in the season yet, and could things change around the league, yes. It is however certain that Maye has been one of the top performers in the league, as he has elevated the game of those around him. Rhamondre Stevenson has improved, Stefon Diggs is looking like he’s back in his prime, and guys like Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas have looked like stars at their position, with Hunter Henry still being that rock.
Time will tell if Maye will jump up the list of MVP favorites, as he does currently sit in the top 5, but one thing is for certain, the New England Patriots have found their guy!
