Short answer…. No, but here’s why!
For starters… they played Sam Houston
This is by no means disrespect to the staff and players at Sam Houston, to be involved in any level of collegiate sports is impressive especially at the Division 1 level. But we have to be honest with ourselves, we’re talking about an SEC team in Texas who was the preseason number 1 overall pick in the AP poll, facing off against a team from the Conference USA. The same conference that just added an FCS team for their first FBS season in Delaware.
Arch statistically had a very good game, 18 of 21 passing for 309 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus 2 touchdowns on the ground. He left the game in the third with Texas up 45-0. It’s all very impressive until you notice Sam Houston hasn’t held a team to under 37 points all year. So Texas didn’t even face off against one of the better Conference USA teams. In 4 games Arch has had one really good performance, despite only really being tested week 1 against Ohio State. With Texas heading to the swamp to face a desperate Florida team next week, with one of the best defenses in football, we could very well see another rough game for Arch.
He’s not your average sophomore
Now Arch may be only a sophomore, but he’s a third year sophomore, with plenty of experience. He started multiple games last year for the injured Quinn Ewers and looked much better than what we’ve seen so far in 2025. He also practiced his whole redshirt year, so this is basically year 3 for him in college football.
There may be a simple answer… maybe Arch isn’t the generational talent everyone pegged him up to be. The amount of pressure on his shoulders is heavier than possibly any collegiate athlete ever. It would not be very surprising to hear that the pressure simply got to him. Maybe he’s fighting through a minor injury? Maybe Steve Sarkisian isn’t developing Arch right? We don’t know what the answer is, but we know he’s not getting his name called on draft night this year if he doesn’t get better fast.
