Is Russell Wilson’s career done?

No one is surprised that a quarterback 13 years into his career is showing signs of regression. But if you had told football fans 10 years ago that Russell Wilson, a super bowl champion, is benched for a rookie 3 weeks into a season, nobody would have believed that. Unfortunately for Russ that is the situation he finds himself in. Two weeks after throwing for 450 yards in a shootout against Dallas, the Giants turned to rookie Jaxson Dart to take over. The question now becomes, after his 4th team in as many years, is Russell Wilson officially past his days as a starting quarterback?

It’s not all Wilson’s fault

One thing we all have to remember is the New York Giants struggles go beyond the quarterback position. Just look at what Daniel Jones is doing this year with the Colts. So it’s unfair to Russ to put all the responsibility on him for his benching. The offensive line did Wilson no favors at all, and head coach Brian Daboll didn’t help much either. It wouldn’t shock the world if it came out that Daboll made the change at quarterback for the sole purpose of saving his job. After all, nobody can expect him to win games with a rookie under center. But if they look decent there’s a chance the Giants opt to bring him back especially if Jaxson Dart and he have a good relationship.

Where to next?

The nice part of this situation is at least Wilson’s contract was only for one year. Meaning Wilson will be a free agent and has his choice of teams this offseason. Unfortunately not many teams will likely be calling his phone. If Russ really wants to continue playing next year, it will likely be as a backup/ veteran mentor. The unpredictability of football does help his efforts, as you never know when your starter can go down. Wilson’s experience certainly sets him up to be one of the more sought after backup quarterbacks. The possibility of retirement also presents itself, Wilson’s already won in this league and proved his legacy should be remembered, so it also wouldn’t be too shocking if Russ decides to hang up the cleats once and for all.
