No, I am not talking about the heisman and national champion Fernando Mendoza, but rather his younger brother Alberto. Alberto maintains three years of eligibility and appeared in 9 games this season. He completed 75% of his passes and scored 6 total touchdowns. Mendoza’s transfer is not shocking for a couple reasons. Firstly Indiana signed the 6th overall QB in the portal when they brought in Josh Hoover from TCU. Mendoza also doesn’t fit Curt Cignetti’s ideology.
Cignetti built this team with experienced players mostly following him over from James Madison, the kind of retention that is unheard of lately in college sports. But it certainly paid off as Indiana walked away with a national championship. The average age of Indiana’s starting group was 23, so it’s easy to see why they were such a disciplined group.
Many programs needing a quarterback will be eyeing the younger Mendoza as a potential suitor. Some of those in the ACC include Georgia Tech, Duke, and Stanford.
After certainly learning a lot his first year at Indiana, we are all intrigued to see where Alberto Mendoza will end up.
