Red Sox’ Trevor Story looks for History on the Base Path

On Tuesday, September 16th against the Athletics, Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story etched his name in the history books, as he tied the MLB record of stealing 30 bases in 30 attempts, not being caught. With one more during the teams final stretch of the season, he would boost himself to the top, all alone.

According to Rob Bradford, Trea Turner, Vince Coleman and Carl Crawford are the other three players to have accomplished this feat in their careers.

Following the signing of Story to Boston from the Colorado Rockies prior to the 2022 season, the Red Sox weren’t blessed with the luxuries of what he had shown in his time at Coors Field. Injuries would shorten his seasons, and he would play only 163 games over three seasons, stealing just 29 bases in that time.

Once this season rolled around, it was a new Trevor Story at Fenway Park, hence stealing more bases this time out than he did in his previous three seasons. The Red Sox signed him to the team for his all around versatility, including his power, defense, and speed, but he isn’t the fasted player on the team. Jarren Duran, Connor Wong, and David Hamilton are all arguably, if not definitely, speedier than Story, but situational baseball is at the top of the shortstops talents.

Previously, Alex Cora had said that he had talked with Story, and Trevor said he wanted to run more, and he has shown success doing just that for his manager. Credit also has to be given to first base coach Jose Flores and third base coach Kyle Hudson. Reminders of the tendencies of pitchers, and what to look for with who’s on the mound, tied with the lead and jump that Story gets, has become lethal.

Story previously spoke on this feat that he is dominating, and close to making history on.

“It’s cool,” he said. “It will be cool to look at after the season, for sure, kinda relish in that.”

The Red Sox are currently in the thick of the wildcard race in the American League. They will look to come back for a series win against the A’s, before heading on the road for divisional matchups against Tampa Bay and Toronto.
