With the NHL trade deadline approaching, like always, many teams will be sellers, and many will be buyers. Many of the selling teams this year have great assets that are either aging, or not a good fit anymore that can benefit teams making a playoff run like the Avs, Wild, or Canes. Here are three teams (besides the Rangers) who I think should be sellers at this deadline, and what they could offer.
Winnipeg Jets
The most surprising team on this list in my opinion. After being a juggernaut last year, Winnipeg is having a nightmare season. This, and their track record of choking in the playoffs probably signifies that this core is expiring and the pieces are just not there. This may not be a full-on rebuild, but pieces like Logan Stanley, Mark Scheifele, and Nino Niederreiter could spark interest around the league.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues have been in hockey limbo since their cup win in 2019. Never truly rebuilding or making a run either, it is most likely time for the Blues to blow it up and start anew. They have some phenomenal assets that could be dealt to playoff teams like Rob Thomas, who has already sparked quite a bit of interest, as well as Jordan Kyrou, Justin Faulk, Brayden Schenn and Jordan Binnington. There are a lot of movable pieces there that teams would love to trade picks and prospects for.
Nashville Predators
The failed experiment that was the signings of Marchessault, Stamkos, and Brady Skjei has shown that the Predators were never truly close to a run. That, coupled with obviously declining players did them no good. It is time for Nashville to deal players like Marchy, Stammer, and Ryan O’Reilly while they still have value, as well as Erik Haula, Michael Bunting, and many more. Blow up the whole operation.
These are three teams I think need to sell at the deadline. Honorable mentions go to the Vancouver Canucks and the New Jersey Devils. Who else do you think is going to sell the house this year at the deadline?
